After hearing about the plot of the upcoming movie Avatar* it struck me as being similar to Helo & Sharon's story with the setting altered and the genders reversed. Anyone else notice the similarity? Athena's story may not be unique in literature, but it was fairly innovative. I wonder if this is the sincerest form of flattery for BSG.

Had never heard of Avatar. There are indeed similarities. As you say the theme of humans falling in love with aliens is not new (remember "Hunters of worlds" from C. Cherrryh). And more recently "The Host" from Stephenie Meyer ; I haven't read it but I've heard somewhere it's about alien love.

The story of Athena seems to be a bit different as she's somehow human (Cylons are the children of humanity).

I noticed Sigourney Weaver was in the cast :)

I didn't mean the alien/human relationship alone but also the particulars of how it occurred. In Avatar you have the invader (a human in this case) taking on the form of the natives in order to better wage war against them, but then falling in love with one of the natives. In BSG you had... pretty much the same but with the humans being on the receiving end of the invasion.

I read The Host. It's well above her vampire fanfic, but nothing that hasn't been done before, and better, by Asimov, Heinlein, and McCaffrey.

I'm super-excited to see just what exactly James Cameron has managed to achieve with Avatar. But as for the Sharon/Helo similarities, James Cameron has been working on this movie for about 15 years now.

I think the term is called "Going Native" in literature

I'm not a big Cameron fan...but we shall see. The first two Terminator films were good, but other than that...

Don't get me started on Titanic. :P

Well, Mr. Cameron is a "blockbuster" guy.

It does sound like a recent move that came out last summer about a similar theme
