Sisters
by Chris Taylor
PG-13 for Colonial swear words

Jump 1

Sharon Valerii sat with her head buried in her hands and wept.

“They started this,” Cavil stated. “If you know a better way to end this insurrection then now is the time to inform the rest of us.”

“No,” Boomer said quietly. “I don’t know.”

Cavil nodded, immersed his hand into a nearby control puddle, and turned to address the Model 4 and 5 Cylons standing at control stations around the basestar’s bridge. “Countdown to jump has begun.”

“We should target the local resurrection ship first,” A nameless number 4 on the other side of the room stated.

“All weapon systems are ready,” Aaron Doral reported.

Sharon was so busy crying that for a few seconds she didn’t notice the change. When she looked up to see why the background noise of the basestar was different she was the only one in the room. The air around her felt cold and thin, and the colors of her surroundings seemed slightly faded as though they were only echos of their real hue.

“This isn’t what I expected,” said a voice from behind her.

Sharon whirled around to see the figure an attractive young woman with jet black hair and a colonial combat uniform standing in the doorway to the control room. Unlike everything else, she looked solid and the color of her face and clothes outshone everything else around her.

“What?” Sharon asked.

“The afterlife,” said the woman. “I didn’t expect it to be like this.”

“I don’t think…” Sharon started to say, but then she suddenly had doubts about what she was going to assert and her voice trailed off without finishing the sentence. She wiped her puffy, tear-filled eyes and tried to focus on the uniform insignia of this strange intruder. “Who are you?” she finally asked.

“Major Kendra Shaw,” the human woman answered as she straightened herself into a proud martial pose. “I died heroically in the line of duty, nuking a Cylon capital ship. And I suppose you are one of the Fates, grieving that my thread has come to its end? Or a ferrywoman perhaps?”

“No,” said Boomer. “Lieutenant Sharon Valerii. I was killed unheroically by one of my fellow crewmates on the Galactica…” Sharon paused and looked around at the ghostly unreal surroundings of the basestar bridge. “… but I’m not supposed to still be dead.”

“Wait a second,” Kendra blurted out as she fumbled momentarily with her holster. “You’re that thing on the targets.” Kendra’s hand found her sidearm and she leveled it at Sharon. “…the Cylon spy that tried to kill Admiral Adama!”

“I’m the Cylon that tried to not kill Commander Adama,” Boomer corrected, but Kendra wasn’t listening to her.

“What’s going on?!” Kendra demanded angrily. “What am I doing here?”

Sharon looked Kendra in the eye, started to answer, but then closed her mouth and frowned. After a moment’s contemplation Sharon spoke. Her voice was calm and even, but sad. “I think you may have been right. I think maybe we’re dead and this is the afterlife. My ship was jumping into combat and the next thing I know I’m here with you. Maybe there was a jump system malfunction, or we were ambushed right as we came into the system and killed before we could react. Now I’m here, waiting to be judged for my sins.”

“I don’t buy that.” Kendra asserted. “Why would the afterlife look like a Cylon spaceship? Why would Hades be staffed by a Cylon?”

“I’m not staffing anything, I just got here.” Boomer replied. She stood, surveyed the spectral basestar room they both occupied, then turned to look at Kendra again. “You said that you nuked a Cylon basestar, didn’t you?”

“I’m not telling you anything.”

“I did, too,” Boomer admitted. “On my last Raptor mission. My copilot and I snuck a nuclear warhead onto a basestar like this one and I blew it to pieces. We’ve both destroyed one of these creatures,” Boomer said as she held her hands out to encompass their surroundings. “Maybe… maybe… this is some sort of cosmic justice that we have to serve our time in Purgatory aboard one.”

“Why the frak would I be punished for nuking…” Kendra started to say. Before she could finish her statement, however, Boomer vanished in a bright flash of prism light.

Jump 2

Kendra Shaw was still in the basestar control room, running her hand along the wall to feel its texture, when the strange Cylon reappeared a few minutes later. It (she?) was crying again; laying sprawled on the floor, the Cylon’s body shook as she sobbed and choked out the words “we’re killing them… we’re really killing them…”

Kendra drew her sidearm, pointed it at the machine crying on the floor, then edged closer and knelt down to get a better look at it. “Is this what Cylons usually do when people aren’t around?” Kendra asked, “or are you… malfunctioning?”

Boomer raised her head to look at Kendra. She tilted her head, examined Kendra’s face for a brief moment, then pushed herself up into a sitting position against a nearby control pedestal and pulled her long loose hair back away from her face. Tears were still rolling down her cheeks and it took her several breaths before she could speak properly enough to say, “You don’t understand… We… we killed them all…”

Kendra’s heart sank and she felt sick to her stomach. “The Human Fleet? The refugees? They’re all gone?” Her grip tightened on the pistol in her hand, but the Cylon shook its head ‘No.’

“Not the humans. They were Cylons like us, and we murdered them,” Boomer admitted. The confession came slowly as if it took all the effort Sharon could muster to put the terrible thoughts into words, “They were our own kind… they trusted us, and we… we massacred them.”

Kendra looked down at the pistol she still held, aware suddenly of how heavy and cold it felt in her hand. When she looked back into Boomer’s eyes her expression had changed. The hard mask of martial bravado had been replaced with the face of a sad, pretty young woman who was burdened with guilt and pain beyond her years. “Sharon,” she said, “I don’t think we’re in this place for blowing up a couple of starships… I think we’re here because of something a lot worse…”

More than Sisters
(an optional ending to Sisters)
by C. Taylor
PG13

Jump 30

Sharon Valerii sat in her quarters and held her breath when her new basestar prepared to jump. The jump countdown was off slightly and for a moment she feared that, as with the Raptor and Heavy Raider before, nothing extraordinary had happened. Then the universe flashed out of existence and she was surrounded by an unreal place that seemed to be a ghostly echo of the basestar itself. “Kendra!” Boomer called out as she quickly looked about the room, but no one answered. She was alone.

Fear raced through Boomer’s mind. Did Kendra, and the ethereal basestar she seemed confined to, cease to exist when the real basestar had been destroyed? Was Kendra’s spirit still trapped in the same place but the new basestar taking her somewhere else? “Kendra!” she shouted again but no answer came back, not even an echo. “Perhaps,” Boomer thought, “she went back to the control room where we first met.” Knowing that she didn’t have a moment to lose, Sharon bolted from her room and sprinted in the direction of the bridge.

“Sharon!”

Kendra Shaw came out of a side corridor to her right and Sharon barely had time to stop before running headlong into her. They caught each other in their arms and Kendra had to step backwards into the wall to avoid being bowled over by Sharon’s momentum.

“I’m so relieved, I was afraid I wouldn’t see you again,” Kendra said with a broad smile, the warmth, life, and color of her flesh standing out in stark contrast to the ethereal realm she inhabited.

“Shhhh…” Sharon replied, “we don’t know how much time we’ll have.”

Sharon felt the arms embracing her tighten as Kendra kissed her. Boomer slid her arms around Kendra’s neck and opened her lips to let her lover’s agile tongue infiltrate her mouth...

…continued in the deep recesses of Pierre’s imagination.

Oh, thank you for re-posting this, Chris.
I know I haven't been much around these last times. Maybe I'm slowly losing interest?

The blue is great to read this calmly.

So, at the end, it is confirmed that Boomer and Kendra had much in common: both, in a complicated way, succeeded in killing themselves. Suicide.

off-topic: yeah, The Plan presents a major risk of retroactive & gratuitous Boomer-frakking. As I said in the Skiffy thread, I won't consider it as canon if it's just too [censored]

off-topic 2: subtlety. greyness. Daybreak II lost it all. Sure, everyone can't be Roy Batty (right, Athena? right, Chief? right, Admiral?), but still...

off-topic 3 & last: I'll follow the re-post of OTS, no problem.

I think skepticism about Boomer's treatment is warranted in light of how far the writers seemed to stray from the character they established in Seasons 1 & 2. I suspect if RDM&Co. could go back in time and reimagine their own reimagining that they'd completely redo Boomer's character and have her really prey on people's emotions instead of being a sympathetic character for the 1st half of the series. They can't do that, so I fear they'll do the next worst thing. Hopefully I'm wrong and they'll show that Boomer gets sick of being a celebrity "hero of the Cylon race" sometime in Season 3 and makes a secret deal to swap identities with some ambitious fellow 8 so that she can go back to being an obscure transport pilot and the other 8 can live a life of fame and power.

Glad to know you'll still be reading OTS. Did you give in to temptation and read ahead on the old draft?

Any plans to write some new ficlets yourself?

Cool story. The mystery of Kendra Shaw unfolds... Enjoyed reading this. I'm very curious why Kendra is appearing to Sharon and what it could mean, especially since she died on one of the original and experimental Basestars.

I believe this thread was originally called "Happy Birthday Pierre."

And so again.

I'm sorry I haven't had time to write the episode of Alternate Tin Soldier where Boomer's Black Angels squadron runs into the Pegasus and Kendra has to... well, maybe next year.
