This stuff kills me, Boomer would have made such a strong alley, if they had just tried. But no the writers wanted doom and darkness..

I honestly think that if we'd gotten season five, there would have been a lot more development and redemption to go around- they just ran out of time, and the writers' strike didn't help.

Actually, I think they're just trapped by their preconceptions and previous plotting. They have to do an Opera House, and the previously emphasized Baltar has to give his lame speech which doesn't really work and is ludicrous for Cavil to take seriously at all. If you think about how they're actually plotting at the end, the person who could credibly convince Cavil to stand down is Boomer.
