The green ray of the Cathedral of Strasbourg

Image

1/8 (!) sec ; f 5.02 ; ISO 200 (!) ; so-called "night"-mode, but it worked somehow. (best of ~5 shots)

On March 21 at 11h38 (12h24 on September 23) a green ray falls above a sculpture of Christ. Each equinox, the green ray of the Cathedral of Strasbourg illuminates through a
stained glass a stone Christ of the XVe century; the Church sees a simple chance there.

Jack isn't the only one with Arizona pictures (although mine aren't quite as impressive as his panorama). The 1st 2 were taken outside Tuscon. The third picture was from Galveston, but it kind of fit the theme.

Got a couple pf fun new ones at the North Georgia State Fair by discovering a fun new setting on my camera. Taken with my (poor, worn-out) 6mp Canon A540.

This one is my favorite- love the passenger below.

Cool! I hope poor Piggy wasn't too scared...

Here are 10 shots I took this morning of the 241P n° 17, a 4-8-2 steam locomotive that made a little show/trip from Le Creusot to Strasbourg and back.

Rose,

Those are all good pictures, but I think the first ferris wheel one is amazing. It really seems to capture the experience in the image. Wow.

Pierre,

The old locomotive is an impressive piece of technology. I looked up the stats: 4,000 horsepower. I'd previously posted this picture and asked if anyone could guess the horsepower of the engine shown:

Image

The answer is approximately 4,000,000 horsepower. The power of one thousand of the locomotives pictured; three orders of magnitude increase in power for vehicles that are approximately the same size (88 ft. long for the vehicle in your picture vs. 103 ft long for the one in mine, both are sized in width and height to fit through existing railway tunnels). A casual observer of the vehicles might think that the difference in power output must be because they belonged to different centuries; the steam locomotive from the 19th and the other vehicle from the 20th or 21st. But that's not true at all. Only 12 years seperated the deployment of both vehicles: the train began service in 1948, and the other in 1960. So the engines shown in your picture and mine were in service at the same time... contemporaries. What could explain one having a thousand times the power of the other? Service life. The locomotive engine had to haul freight for decades. The other vehicle only had to make one 20 minute trip. In case you hadn't guessed, the engine in my photograph is from an ICBM. I'm sure the locomotive cost less, too.

I haven't seen a Comanche helecopter in person. Perhaps Bob has.

Wow, amazing pics!! Those carnival ones are so pretty!

Here's one of my faves, I took it in Bavaria from the Neuschwanstein Castle (the one in Germany that the Disney castle is based on)

Nice photo, Jemma. Yes, it's the castle of Ludwig II the "mad".

Chris, the power of the ICBM engine is incredible! It's a rocket, sure. I mean, it's "easier" than something that must rely on wheels. I think Donald Campbell's wheel-driven land speed record from 1965 lasted for a very long time. Even nowadays, it's still the "non-supercharged piston-engine" record : 658.526 km/h.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel-driv ... eed_record

Modern trains like the TGV have three or four times (12000 KW) more power than the steam loco (3000 KW) above, but the average power of a "normal" train is 6000 KW.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TGV

I asked the question about the Comanche because I had the Comanche PC-games (more "arcade" oriented than hard-core simulation) and played a lot with them in the past...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comanche_series
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAH-66_Comanche

The first Comanche (1992), from Novalogic, was the first game that required a 386 (but needed a Pentium 60 - not available at this time - to be "smooth") and 4 (four! :) ) Mo RAM to start !!!

Wow! Really great pictures, Jack!

:fries: :ok:

I'd like to pick a favorite photo, but they are all so good... the last caption is definately my favorite text though.

Hmm... 1st Arizona and now Egypt. There seems to be a desert theme to your travels.

I LOVE the bas-relief shot! I wanted to be an Egyptologist when I was growing up, until I realized that involved dirt.
